Will Ludwigsen is not only a friend but a brilliant writer. His short novel A Scout Is Brave hooks me from page one and never lets go. How can one not be impressed with his graceful storytelling, the kindness and sensitivity with which he writes about a boy’s coming of age, and the way he so deftly weaves horror and fantasy elements into his narrative? This is a poignant tale of childhood, parenthood, friendship, 1960s nostalgia, and the magic that makes life worth living — with a touch of weird.
I’ve been a fan of Will’s writing for a long time. I’ll also recommend his story collection In Search Of and Others. Visit Will’s site for more info about Will, his writing, and a neat photo of Will as a Boy Scout.
I must also give a shoutout to Will for giving me the idea for this “Friends & Writers” column. We were chatting at the International Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts earlier this year, lamenting about how many fine writers we know who don’t get the attention they deserve, when I decided to do something about it.
I hope Will gets a lot of attention for this little gem!
